EDITORIAL 2020-2021

"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." This quote attributed to the writer Mark Twain (1835-1910) fully echoes our contemporary reality: if misinformation is just as old as the world itself, its scope and increasing scale in the internet and social network era has now become a major stake.

This phenomenon, largely based on image manipulation, has particularly increased with the recent health crisis: weeks of isolation have demonstrated that social networks have now become the sole source of social interaction and information for many, and primarily for the young.

It is undeniable that the vast volume of information to which we are exposed is detrimental to our ability to discern/of discernment… From this point on, how can one confront with the complexity of images and overcome the obvious?

In 2020-2021, the youth participating in La Fabrique du Regard workshops investigated the pitfalls of visual information: what is the image proof of? How to overcome the true-false dichotomy? Who creates or broadcasts an image and for what purposes? 32 artists, journalists and professionals of the image industry guided them during workshops conducted in class or remotely via ERSILIA, an online platform for civic education through images, designed by LE BAL/La Fabrique du Regard.

A total of 1,200 young people from 43 schools and partner structures reflected on images and created films, newspapers, posters, etc., together with invited artists and professionals around the theme "SEEING IS BELIEVING, PROOF THROUGH IMAGES?"
